Family Physicians are dedicated to treating the whole person. They create caring relationships with patients and their families, unlike other specialties that are limited to a particular organ, disease, age, or sex. Family Medicine integrates care for patients accross the full spectrum of ages. Family Physicians are advocates for patients.
Family Physicians complete a three-year residency program after graduating from medical school. As part of their residency, they provide care to patients in both hospital and office settings. Family Physicians receive training in Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Psychiatry, Neurology, Surgery, and Community Medicine
Family Physicians are uniquely qualified to care for the "whole person." Their training has prepared them to care for the emotional, behavioral, social, and family needs. The family physician functions as the patent's point of entry into the healthcare system. Most people want a physician who has known them for many years and who they trust with their medical problems. This need is most apparent when people are first diagnosed with a new medical problem. It is very comforting to know that your Family Physician will be there for you throughout the process. Continuity of care is the hallmark of Family Medicine. You and your family will be able to see the same physician throughout a lifetime.
